ACCIDENT RECORD
According to the Ministry's data:
361 railway workers died in train accidents while carrying out maintenance work on railway tracks between 2019–20 and 27 November 2023.
The largest numbers were:
Railway zone | Deaths |
Central Railway | 44 |
Northern Railway | 40 |
North Central Railway | 31 |
. Nashik/Bhusawal — four trackmen killed by tower wagon, 2023
This is probably one of the best real-world examples for your project.
On 13 February 2023, four railway trackmen were killed near Lasalgaon, Nashik, when a tower wagon hit them while they were performing maintenance-related work.
The tower wagon itself was being used for maintenance and repair of overhead electric wires.

2. Seoni, Madhya Pradesh — two railway personnel killed while checking tracks
On 30 January 2023, two railway personnel died when an engine collided with the trolley they were using while checking railway tracks between Seoni and Bhoma.
The deceased included a Senior Section Engineer and a Trackman. Another employee was seriously injured.
The location was reportedly on a curve, meaning the approaching engine was not easily visible to the workers.

3. Bhopal — trackman killed while inspecting track, 2025
A 44-year-old trackman, Avdhesh Kumar Sahu, died in September 2025 after being struck by a train while performing track inspection duty near the Bhadbhada railway track in Bhopal.
He was inspecting the track with a colleague when a train approached. His colleague managed to move away, but Sahu was struck while attempting to escape.
This is particularly relevant because it shows that even routine inspection—not just major maintenance work—can expose workers to approaching trains.

4. Kanpur — trackman killed during night patrol, 2025
In February 2025, railway trackman Rajesh Kumar Yadav was killed after being struck by a train while patrolling the down track between Malasa and Lalpur on the Kanpur–Jhansi line.
The incident occurred around 2 AM while he was on night patrol duty.
This gives you another potential scheduling variable:
🌙 Time of maintenance
You could distinguish:
- Day
- Night
- Peak traffic
- Low traffic
- Visibility conditions
. 312 deaths — another official Parliamentary figure
A 2022 Rajya Sabha response reported 312 track-maintenance personnel deaths on duty over roughly four years, with the highest state totals including:
State | Deaths |
Uttar Pradesh | 61 |
Maharashtra | 48 |
West Bengal | 35 |
Andhra Pradesh | 33 |
Bihar | 29 |
Rajasthan | 27 |
Madhya Pradesh | 26 |
The Government itself says the problem is serious—but improving
There is also a 2026 PIB/Ministry of Railways release, which is probably the most current official source I found.
It states that there has been a 66% reduction in railway staff deaths during track-maintenance work compared with 2013–14, when there were 196 deaths.
The same release says Indian Railways is progressively deploying a VHF-based Approaching Train Warning System, and around 340 block sections had been covered at the time of the release.
